Scenario #1 – Color Blind Place – Lunch at a local café. Two pairs of friends who know each other well. Blake (Brodie) – A well-meaning guy. Wants to work towards unity. Becomes defensive though when challenged on his approach to things. Believes in being colorblind. Tracie (Aziza) – An activist against racism. Believes everyone is a little bit prejudice. Always trying to explain to others a better way to communicate. Brad (Jahan)– Tracie’s friend. Kind, loving. Doesn’t like conflict. Will try to communicate, but if it reaches a certain level of frustration, he will shut down. Diane (Beth) – Blake’s friend. Also doesn’t like conflict, but is a little more vocal about it. Doesn’t really see why we can’t just all get along? We are in a “post-racial” society after all. Outline of Scene 1. Starts with Blake and Diane already at the table. Brief chitchat. Work, kids. a. Tracie and Brad show up, greet their friends, sit down. More chit chat. b. Blake brings up The Wiz Live! which he finally got to see recently. c. Conversation around that, then Diane brings up how some people were irritated that it featured an all-black cast. Isn’t that crazy? d. Blake announces he doesn’t see color. That he is colorblind when it comes to race. 2. Conflict ensues. Mainly between Blake and Tracie. She at first strives to explain why that is offensive to her. a. Blake becomes defensive. b. Diane tries to intervene but ends up just fanning the flames with the idea that we live in a post-racial society. c. Brad tries to intervene but quickly shuts down when his efforts prove to be ineffective. He doesn’t acknowledge their feelings at all. d. The interaction revolves around each person trying to be “right” and compassionate. A lot of defensiveness, a lot of unresolved anger and frustration. 3. Lunch ends abruptly when Tracie and Brad decide to leave. Tracie reaches her breaking point and enough is enough.
